Rustic Fare with Fabia MacNair

There are so many experiences I am falling in love with in this new landscape of Vancouver. Having lived in amazing cities, I know New York will always be one that holds the most memories and epitomizes the word passion and the phrase ‘Go for It!’.  However this last chapter has brought the perfect blend of culture, adventure, well being and friendship making it the essential blend and a great place to lay ones hat. Let’s hope for many years to come!

Amongst this blend I have found a connective link between some amazing women and would like to share a series of features over the next few months to introduce them to you.

Interior Designer, Fabia MacNair of

Styling Spaces

When I first met Fabia she was introduced to me as Fab ! and I was wow really? that’s literally my favorite word, (well after literally!).

The next major impression Fab made, was her deep loyalty to promoting powerful women, celebrating their success and also the value of friendship. Fabia’s design sense speaks for itself, and being two creative souls we have more to talk about than hours in the day. The simplest thing like the way light hits a room changing a color palette can keep us engaged with possibilities of bringing life into an ordinary space to make it extraordinary. I know for me as a photographer, light is everything, its the canvas and I know Fab feels the same way.

Let’s take a look behind the curtain of Interior Designer Fabia and Styling spaces…….

Tell us a little about what you do?

I believe a home is a barometer of your well-being and it hurts my heart to see a home that is not living up to its potential.  I am an architectural technologist by trade and that give me an understanding of the structure and systems of a home so if you’re renovating a home or building from the ground up, I can direct you to make the choices that helps your home look, live and feel better so that you can too!

What do you love doing most in business and for pleasure?

Business: I absolutely love making things work and look beautiful. In that order. If you have a beautiful home that doesn’t work for you, what good is it? I adore clever design, I would love to be involved in flipping my own homes.

Personal:I love to create. Even on a personal level. I enjoy entertaining friends with the new dish or sitting at my easel and creating a new piece of artwork. I even love to create new ways to solve an old problem.

What is your favorite color palette

My absolute favourite colour palette would be a dark grey cashmere with a light creamy camel wool add in ivory with rusty orange or navy blue accents. The colours in this rust wall makes me swoon!!

I write a lot about food, what does food mean for you?

Real, whole, nutrient rich, fresh food.

Being raised Italian we had our own gardens, and made our food from scratch. Canned our own tomatoes and made fresh bread, pizza, and pasta every week. Although I don’t eat many too many of these things anymore I still believe and if you make it from scratch you can indulge even in french fries once in a while.

I love to cook and share recipes, could you share one of your favorites with us?

I have been following your blog and I’m so inspired with the healthy but great tasting recipes you have shared, so this is one I think you will love. It is one of my families favorites, simple and easy to adapt both as a main or side dish.

Wheat Berry Chickpea Salad

  • 1 cup wheat berries
  • 3-4 cups cold water
  • 3-4 tbsp apple cider vinegar (important)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Cook wheat berries in water, salt, and the apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil, and turn heat to medium high.
  2. Simmer (covered) for 45-60 minutes until round and plumping. This can be done the night before by boiling for 30 minutes then turning off the heat and leaving it sit overnight.
  • 1 cup chickpeas (marinate them in the dressing for a hour if you like deeper flavours)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh mint
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 cup pomegranate seeds (can substitute apples or pears)
  • 2 cups finely minced kale leaves (removed from stems)
  • 1 heaping cup cubed feta cheese (optional)

  • 1 minced shallot
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  1. Throw all ingredients into a high speed blender and combine until smooth
  2. Add all salad ingredients into a mixing bowl, drizzle with dressing, toss and serve

What makes women strong?

Knowing who you are. Being able to do what’s hard when no one else around you can and being able to ask for help when you absolutely can’t.

What do you love about Vancouver?

The natural beauty that surrounds me every day literally fills my soul! Even the change in weather brings such stunning beauty that I feel fortunate to be able to witness it every day.
I love that an afternoon with friends can be a hike or a seawall walk instead of coffee or lunch. And I adore my” sundowners”- watching the sun set with a glass of wine and few friends.

What does friendship mean to you?

Friendship means understanding, not agreement. It means forgiveness, not forgetting. It means memories last, even if contact is lost.

Dreams / Goals/ Ambitions ???

I’m at the point in my life when I have achieved a whole lot of what I set out to. I’ve even made it through a bucket list so I guess my goal would be to create another bucket list :-

Writing my life story will be on it. So will seeing a lot more of the world.

What makes you smile?

my kids, my husband’s laugh, my friends, watching people be kind to each other 🙂

If you had to pick a favorite quote, what would it be?

“I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.”  – Marilyn Monroe

Last question, what is your favorite song??

Too many to name but I guess my theme song would be

“accentuate the positive”

And I think thats the perfect place to end because thats really how I see you Fab, accentuating the positive!

Check back to meet some other wonderful ladies with a little eccentricity from…
